If Rick were to die, how would it happen?

    The ending to the most recent episode, among other things that I'll get into later, got me thinking about what Rick's fate might be when the show (or, rather, the comic) finally ends. I think for the express purpose of crafting a legitimate work of art, Kirkman will decide that Rick will die at the end of the story. That event would serve to catalyze Carl's growth in the new world, and, I believe, make him ultimately better-suited to lead said new world. Now the question is, how would such a thing occur?

    Rick certainly has weaknesses, as we saw in the most recent episode, "Thank You". But as far as self-preservation goes, he seems to be the most well-equipped out of anyone else in the show. But perhaps he'll achieve martyrdom? As in, sacrificing himself to save his son? That seems likely. And if such an event entails having him bitten and subsequently ill, then Carl will have to orphan himself. That would be enthralling.

    But that's just an idea, and I'd like to hear from other people. What is Rick's kryptonite and how will the new world ultimately beat him? This is assuming he dies at all, of course. If you don't think he will, I'd like to hear why.

    His death was set up last night-- that cut will get infected and his unwillingness to part with his hand will lead to his slow and horrible death.

    I don't think he dies on the show. The new world is going to need Rick Grimes.

    I don't read the comics, so, for me, I can't imagine Carl as the leader of the group if Rick were to die years from now.

    Yes, we always know people die and no one is safe, but the flip side of that is that some people don't die. I don't see why our experienced group can't be in the group that survives. It's not just that I like them and want them to live. Their survival is what rings truest for me.

    TV show: surrounded by walkers in an RV filled with high explosives. He sets it off Armageddon style with flashbacks of Lori & Carl flying by...then...he presses the button and takes out the huge herd to save his friends.
    Comic: Horribly, thanks to Kirkman. Probably cheaply too. And shithead sticking-his-dick-in-crazy Carl takes over. Yay.
