For a while I wasn't sure if I agreed with keeping Daryl around for so long due to his popularity. I worried that this would affect the quality of the show and Daryl would be around long after his character declined. But so far, this hasn't been the case, and it likely won't be the case at least for a while.

I've heard that Darabont intended to kill Daryl off during season 1. However, they decided that the character was too likeable and popular to die so soon, so kept him around. Now, I think he's in it for the long haul. I'd be surprised if he died anytime soon.
